Age-Related Management of Psychological Issues in Older Adults

December 14, 2015

As America’s population ages, the need for mental and behavioral health services continues to increase. Recent data indicate that an estimated 20.4% of adults 65 years of age or older meet criteria for a mental disorder, and it has been found that many mental disorders can be exacerbated by chronic physical health conditions. Approximately 80% of older adults have at least 1 chronic health condition, so there is a need to address the effects of these chronic health conditions on mental and behavioral health disorders. In addition, treatment interventions for the optimal management of common mental health conditions in this population need to be identified. This activity is designed to equip HCPs with the skills to recognize the relationship between chronic illness and mental disorders and to help them manage psychological issues in older adults through treatment adherence and behavioral interventions.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  • Differentiate the common behavioral syndromes in older adults including depression and neurocognitive disorders
  • Identify the impact of chronic health conditions on cognitive, behavioral and mental health
  • Describe evidence-based psychotherapeutic, behavioral and pharmacological treatments for depression and neurocognitive impairment in later life
  • Discuss the factors that contribute to improved adherence with recommended treatments
