$0.00 Activity descriptionGenetic testing, marketed directly to customers, has become more and more prevalent and is expanding the number of people who are obtaining information about their DNA (or genome). Consumers send in a DNA sample and receive their results directly; in most cases, bypassing a health care professional (HCP). Consumers may receive confusing or unexpected results and may be in need of competent guidance from a knowledgeable HCP.
Review of Risk Factors in the Identification of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
  • Disease Management
  • Attendance - General Attendance
  • COPE - Ophthalmologists/Optometrists
$0.00 This activity will examine risk factors for glaucoma that will assist healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the early identification of this condition in general primary eye care practice. Individual risk factors will be discussed, and pertinent literature will be reviewed to provide insight into how certain factors in combination, such as Krukenberg spindles, homogeneous trabecular meshwork pigmentation and iris transillumination defects can indicate an increased risk and alert HCPs to the presence of this disorder. A new tool will be introduced to help recommend when specific glaucoma testing is indicated.

$0.00 Activity descriptionSickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder caused by a gene mutation that leads to the production of abnormal hemoglobin that distorts red blood cells into a crescent or sickle shape. Complications of SCD are lifelong and can be life threatening. New gene therapies promise a potential cure for SCD by subtly altering the genetic information in cells. Health disparities and limited resources among individuals with SCD, particularly in low-income and rural communities, are challenging and can lead to limited access to SCD centers and worse outcomes.

$0.00 Activity descriptionHealth literacy is associated with cognitive function across multiple domains in older adults. Unfortunately, older adults may face additional memory and cognitive challenges that can further limit their health literacy. There are several different age-related changes that could contribute to the decrease in health literacy in older adults. Although the rate and severity of these age-related changes vary among individuals, these should be considered when assessing an older adult’s health literacy.
