Activity description To promote diversity and cultural competence in health care providers, help decrease barriers and achieve the goal of trust and successful communication in end-of-life care in interracial settings, an assessment of patients' values, beliefs and preferences are needed. This activity will identify disparities and discuss barriers preventing underrepresented diverse groups from access to hospice and end-of-life care and explore ways to provide equitable care to all diverse groups at the end of life.

The successful management of obesity—a complex, chronic and relapsing disease—through sustainable weight loss interventions can greatly improve individuals’ overall health status and diminish the severity of concomitant diseases such as diabetes. This activity will provide an overview of obesity and diabetes that describes effective multi-interventional approaches to weight loss and, importantly, highlights the role of incorporated lifestyle changes in promoting the likelihood of weight loss success and improved health outcomes. The conversational style of this activity will encourage discussion around obesity-care planning and examine the factors that must be considered due to the chronic and relapsing characteristics of this disease.

While scientists are still working to identify and clarify all of the functions of sleep, decades of studies have confirmed that sleep is of fundamental importance for various physical and cognitive processes and even survival. Studies have also identified potentially catastrophic effects of lack of sleep on health, wellness, and brain function. This presentation will discuss research that indicates the impact of sleep deprivation on the body and examine the role of underdiagnosed sleep apnea as a significant threat to public health.
