Creating Space for Complex Conversations with Patients Experiencing Life-Changing Illnesses

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Caring for patients with complex medical conditions can be emotionally challenging for health care providers, particularly when difficult conversations need to be had with patients and their loved ones. This session will explore complex grief, its symptoms, and how health care professionals can recognize it in themselves and their patients, as well as provide strategies for managing grief and supporting patients and families.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of dentists/allied dental staff, dietitians, dietetic technicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the importance of a grief-and-loss approach to patient care.
  • Identify approaches and tools that health care professionals can use to ground themselves in preparation for the workday.
  • Discuss the importance of assessing mental and emotional health in addition to physical health when working with patients..
