Conference educational objectives

After completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify developments in kidney transplantation, including the management of highly sensitized patients, new approaches to immunosuppression minimization, and current research in clinical tolerance induction;
  • Recognize the impact and importance of the multidisciplinary team in optimizing outcomes and successful management of transplant recipients;
  • Examine pancreas and islet transplantation for the treatment of diabetes.
  • State advances, outcomes, and trends in living-donor liver and kidney transplantation;
  • Relate emerging trends in advanced heart failure, focusing on the role of medical management, left-ventricular-assist devices, and cardiac transplantation;
  • Describe the role of the depletion of alpha/beta cells in haploidentical transplantation in reducing graft-versus-host disease;
  • Review current practices in donation-after-cardiac-death (DCD) transplantation and state the impact of the organ procurement organization and transplant program's relationship on the success of a DCD program;
  • List indications, outcomes, and current trends in lung transplantation.
  • State the changes driven by the Milan criteria for liver transplant patients with hepatocellular cancer and alcoholic liver disease;
  • Discuss the advances in organ preservation methods, techniques and device usage, as well as its future direction in organ transplantation; and
  • Describe the experience of organ donation from a transplant recipient's perspective.
