About the Conference

 

This conference will provide a unique opportunity to hear UT Southwestern Medical Center transplant experts present a comprehensive review and update on recent advances in solid organ and blood/marrow transplantation.

As new treatment protocols are emerging, transplantation is becoming a more acceptable treatment modality for end-stage organ failure. Conference participants will learn about the latest indications for solid organ transplant; the use of ventricular assist devices as a bridge to transplant and as destination therapy; advances in ex vivo lung perfusion; achieving optimal outcomes in liver transplant; and strategies to increase the organ donor pool. In addition, the different types of blood/marrow transplants will be presented, along with the importance of timely referral for transplant; a review of remission and relapse rates; and psychosocial issues in transplant recipients. Posttransplant care will also be discussed, including immunosuppression, management of graft rejection, infection, malignancies, noncompliance, psychosocial issues and comorbid conditions.

Conference Educational Objectives

  • Relate emerging trends in advanced heart failure, focusing on neuromuscular cardiomyopathies; adults with congenital heart disease; left-ventricular-assist devices and cardiac transplantation.
  • Review advances in blood/marrow transplantation, including psychosocial barriers, noncompliance-related behaviors and management strategies for long-term survivors.
  • Outline the evaluation, candidate selection, and allocation process for liver transplantation, as well as recognize the challenges of care for patients with cirrhosis and hepatic decompensation.
  • Examine the changing role of liver transplantation for hepatitis C virus with the evolution of new therapeutic options.
  • Discuss treatment options for patients with end-stage lung disease, to include lung transplantation, as well as the role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ex vivo lung perfusion.
  • Explain the impact of living and marginal donors within the donor pool for solid organ transplantation.
