Purpose

Clinical research discoveries in the fields of oncology, hematopoietic stem cell- and solid organ-transplantation continue to transform medicine, offering patients extended survival and hope for improved quality of life. The purpose of this conference is to educate health care professionals who practice in these specialized areas of adult and pediatric complex medical management.

Conference Format

During this three-day comprehensive, accredited conference, expert faculty will outline the challenges, advances, and revised treatment options for adult and pediatric cancer, stem cell- and solid organ-transplantation management.

Join Us for One, Two or All Three Days!

Participants are invited to create an agenda that best meets their specific needs by attending one, two or all three days of this conference. One area of medicine is covered each day—Wednesday is solid organ transplantation; Thursday, stem cell transplantation; and Friday, oncology.

After completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify and relate the emerging trends in organ transplantation, focusing on the biomarkers used for solid organs and the clinical and allocation considerations for kidney, liver, intestine, and heart transplantation.
  2. Examine the importance of timely referrals and the impact of a multidisciplinary approach when managing patients on the transplant wait list.
  3. Analyze updated immunosuppression protocols and their effectiveness in avoiding long-term complications associated with immunosuppression in liver and kidney transplantation.
  4. List clinical issues associated with islet-cell transplantation that create a barrier to this technology becoming approved as a standard of care for type 1 diabetes.
  5. Recognize treatment-related complications that may require long-term therapy and management, including iron overload, graft-versus-host disease, and secondary carcinogenesis.
  6. Explain the unique considerations—with an emphasis on late effects—in treating childhood cancers, and discuss how health care management must change as children become adolescents.
  7. Discuss how nurses can positively impact outcomes and decrease intensive care unit (ICU) admissions through early recognition of and intervention for complications throughout the course of transplantation.
  8. Describe the role of precision medicine in defining individual patterns of disease and treatment strategies.
