This conference will provide attendees with an overview of emerging trends in oncology, solid organ- and blood/marrow transplantation. Join us as clinical experts provide insight into innovative approaches to the ongoing management and continuing support of patients with complex cancers and organ failures. Specialists will share their visions of the evolution of oncology treatments expected within the next decade, focusing on advances in medical, surgical and radiation therapy treatment options. Innovations in the comprehensive treatment of thyroid cancer and stem cell transplantation in sickle cell disease will be featured. Furthermore, challenges and successes in improving the patient experience both during treatment and as those patients become long-term survivors will be highlighted. Conference participants will gain insight into the organ donation continuum, living kidney donation, and the ethics of organ transplantation. Educational objectives
After completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize the variety of health care professionals and their essential roles as patients move through the solid organ transplant continuum, including transplant surgeons and the issues they face from the time they receive an organ offer through patient discharge.
- Examine advances in lung, heart and living donor kidney transplantation, as well as intestinal rehabilitation.
- Discuss some of the ethical principles and considerations unique to solid organ transplant.
- Recognize the benefits of having a multidisciplinary team involved in managing prostate- and thyroid-cancer patients from early diagnosis through development of the initial treatment plan.
- Describe advances in transplantation for patients with sickle cell anemia, as well as novel therapies being incorporated when transplanting multiple myeloma patients.
- Discuss the importance of programs and initiatives that are designed to improve patient/caregiver communications and gain patient and family input into care delivery.
- Recognize the long-term quality-of-life impact that establishing a survivorship clinic may have on managing potential physical and emotional changes facing cancer survivors.
