About This Conference

This conference will provide attendees with an extensive overview of emerging technologies and innovative strategies for the treatment and management of complex oncology, blood/marrow stem cell transplant and solid organ transplant patients.

Join us as clinical experts highlight progressive interventions and novel surgical and nonsurgical techniques in the initial treatment, ongoing management, and continuing support of patients with complex cancers and organ failure. Specialists will share their insights on genetic testing, human research, the role of palliative care, complex side effect management, and quality improvement, as well as discuss the impact of health care reform directives. Conference participants will also gain unique insight into the liver and blood stem cell transplant experience from former patients and family caregivers who will share their personal stories.

Conference Educational Objectives

  • Identify treatment and toxicity-management strategies for select cancers, including innovative surgical options, radiotherapy techniques, and the role of interventional radiology.
  • Discuss the role of clinical trials that contribute to the advancement of cancer treatment, while respecting the need to protect human subjects and promote understanding of the benefits and risks involved.
  • Recognize the role of genetic testing in potentially identifying individuals and families at increased risk for certain types of cancer, and how genetic counseling is used effectively in promoting awareness, early detection and cancer prevention.
  • Examine the specialized practice of intensive patient management before and after solid organ transplant to improve outcomes for patients who experience intestinal, islet cell, heart, and kidney transplants.
  • Recognize the impact of the new health care reform mandates on solid organ transplant programs and the longstanding dilemma of limited organ availability for an ever-growing number of patients awaiting transplant.
  • Describe the importance of having multidisciplinary teams involved in the care of complex patients with individual needs that include: 1) the role of the palliative care team in solid organ transplant; 2) destination therapy for heart failure patients; and 3) the transition of care for teens as they move from pediatric to adult services.
