This activity consists of a recorded presentation from the "Medical Director and Clinician Leadership Forum 2025" held in Nashville, TN., October 22, 2025.
This presentation reviews the latest evidence-based strategies for identifying, diagnosing and managing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now recognized as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The progressive form of this disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is on track to become the leading cause of liver transplantation in the United States. Learn about current guidelines, risk-stratification tools, and emerging therapies, and gain insights to improve early detection and optimize patient outcomes.

- Discuss current clinical guidelines for screening, diagnosis and staging of fatty liver disease.
- Evaluate available and emerging treatment options, including lifestyle interventions and pharmacologic therapies.
- Review strategies for long-term monitoring and multidisciplinary management of patients with fatty liver disease.

Arema A. Pereira, MBBS, MD, is the department chair of gastroenterology at Optum, with expertise in hepatology and transplant medicine. A graduate of St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences in Bangalore, India, she began her career in research at Tufts University in Boston. She later completed her internal medicine residency and a dedicated hepatitis C fellowship at New York Presbyterian Cornell.
Relocating to the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Pereira completed both her Gastroenterology fellowship and a specialized liver transplant fellowship at the University of Washington. This extensive training and research background led her to her current role at Optum, legacy The Everett Clinic, where she combines clinical practice with departmental leadership. In her time outside of work, she enjoys traveling with her family and cultivating a passion for permaculture.
