Initiatives to Address Diversity in Oncology
This activity consists of recorded presentations from the "30th Annual National Conference" held virtually Sept. 29–30, 2021.
A lack of meaningful representation of certain racial and ethnic minorities persists in many fields of medicine, including that of oncology, despite diversity’s association with (as stated by the Institute of Medicine) “improved access to care for racial and ethnic minority patients, greater patient choice and satisfaction, better patient-provider communication, and better educational experiences for all students while in training.” Explore the multiple initiatives that have been created to remedy inequities that impact health outcomes for minority groups—such as disparities in social determinants of health and access to a high-quality and ethnically diverse oncology workforce.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, psychologists, social workers and other health care professionals who are interested in diversity in oncology.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Examine overall disparities in morbidity and mortality rates and associated factors that influence health outcomes within minority groups.
- Review the current landscape of oncologic health care providers, including disparities in representation of minority groups, and discuss associated limitations in care.
- Discuss current initiatives that aim to increase racial and ethnic diversity with the oncologic workforce, improve cultural competency, and engender patient trust and comfort.
- Identify strategies to recognize and address disparities in diversity and health equity within the health care team.

Disclosures of relevant financial relationships
In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education's (ACCME) Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, OptumHealth Education (OHE) requires all those in control of educational content to disclose their financial relationships with ineligible companies within the prior 24 months. Participants must have attended the entire Web-based activity and completed an evaluation to receive a certificate. Partial credit is not available.
OptumHealth Education is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to offer continuing education for psychologists. OptumHealth Education maintains responsibility for this program. 1.0 CE hour.
As a Jointly Accredited Organization, OptumHealth Education is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. OptumHealth Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.0 enduring continuing education credit.
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization with which they wish to obtain credit.
