Providing affirming and equitable care for LGBTQ+ individuals is crucial to mitigate the existing health disparities experienced by members of this community, including stigma, marginalization and lack of access to culturally competent care. This activity aims to promote a more inclusive and understanding health care experience and foster better outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals through an in-depth exploration of the health care challenges and disparities faced by this community. This activity will discuss diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and the fluidity within these concepts and will also examine stigmas as conveyed through macro- and micro-aggressions. Participants will gain insight into best practices for creating inclusive health care environments, communicating in affirming ways and combating stigma in the LGBTQ+ individual’s health care journey. Resources will be provided that health care professionals and patients can utilize for interventions and support.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and physicians who have an interest in providing affirming and equitable care for LGBTQ+ individuals

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the extent of health care marginalization experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals, including the prevalence of social stigmas and discrimination within health care settings. 
  • Define and appreciate the differences between sex, sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as the fluidity and diversity within these concepts. 
  • Describe approaches to communicate effectively and sensitively with LGBTQ+ individuals and to ensure that health care environments are welcoming and affirming. 
  • Identify common forms of subtle acts of exclusion against LGBTQ+ individuals in health care settings and strategies to create more equitable health care experiences. 
  • Discuss interventions and resources available for LGBTQ+ care and equity that can enhance the quality of care provided to this community.
