Live-Donor Liver Transplantation: A Life-Saving Option for End-Stage Liver Disease

March 12, 2019

Activity description

Living-liver donation can be a life-saving surgery for individuals awaiting liver transplantation. Through access to a live donor, individuals with end-stage liver disease can receive a life-saving transplant much sooner than if they waited for a deceased-donor liver to become available. With more than 14,000 Americans on the waiting list for a liver transplant—and only about 5,000 deceased-donor livers available for transplant—live-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has tremendous benefits, including not only saving the lives of transplant recipients but also enabling alternative candidates on the liver transplant waiting list to receive deceased-donor organs that would not otherwise have been available to them.

During this activity, Dr. Abhinav Humar will provide an overview of the current status of LDLT, its advantages and disadvantages, and the importance of an interdisciplinary team approach to management of donors and recipients.
