Understanding Secondary Hyperparathyroidism

Activity description

Hyperparathyroidism is an excess of parathyroid hormone in an individual’s bloodstream. There are three types of hyperparathyroidism. In primary hyperparathyroidism, one or more of the parathyroid glands produce the hormone in excess. This typically results in high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia). In secondary hyperparathyroidism, parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels are elevated due to a condition outside of the parathyroid glands. These external conditions are related to or cause hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or low vitamin D levels. Each of these conditions stimulates production of parathyroid hormone. Tertiary hyperparathyroidism is typically seen in end-stage renal disease. This activity will review and define the key differences between primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism. It will also explore the diagnosis and management of secondary hyperparathyroidism as well as provide guidance about when to consult a specialist.
