HUED: Skin Equity and Inclusion
Black patients are often diagnosed with skin cancer at more advanced stages, which results in poorer outcomes. The root cause of inequities within dermatology, and all fields of medicine, is centered around the social determinants of health. Even those in the community trying to achieve higher medical education often experience many barriers. Additionally, Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities are underrepresented in dermatology curricula, training, research and educational resources. This contributes significantly to the gaps in knowledge about proper and effective diagnosis, treatment and management of common conditions in skin of color. This Skin Equity and Inclusion course focuses on Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities that are underrepresented in medicine, particularly dermatology.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of all patient-facing health care providers; health care practitioners who intend to provide care to Black, Latinx, and Indigenous patients, including but not limited to dermatologists, nurses, and nurse practitioners. Additionally, it may apply to counselors, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, PAs, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other HCPs who are interested in skin equity and inclusion.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Exemplify how underrepresentation in populations in the field of dermatology contributes to a growing gap in skin care equity.
- Identify gaps in medical education and training that contribute to skin inequities for Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities.
- State the influence of social determinants of health and provider bias on equitable skin care.
- List structurally competent skin care practices that aid in properly diagnosing and treating common conditions in skin of color.

In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education's (ACCME) Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, Optum Health Education (OHE) requires all those in control of educational content to disclose their financial relationships with ineligible companies within the prior 24 months. In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Optum Health Education and HUED. Optum Health Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the health care team.
Credit designation statements
This activity was planned by and for the health care team, and learners will receive 1.50 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.
Completion of this RD/DTR profession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit=One CPEU).
If the activity is dietetics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour=1 CPEU).
RD's and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log. Performance indicator selection is at the learner's discretion.
The participant will be awarded up to 1.5 contact hour(s) of credit for attendance and completion of supplemental materials.
The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP) accepts credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME and ANCC.

Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
CA: The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licensees. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals, such as those listed below. Check with your board to be sure.
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been pre-approved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization with which they wish to obtain credit.
