HUED: Introduction to Perinatal Health Equity

Activity description

Adequate and quality perinatal healthcare is a key contributor to successful outcomes. It is important during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum periods, as well as the overall health outcomes for their children. As a result of systemic racism and historical disenfranchisement in the U.S., Black and Indigenous women die of preventable pregnancy related conditions at a rate 2-4 times higher than other races, even when socioeconomic and educational variables are considered. This course will explore inequities in perinatal and maternal health through the comparison of history and current state of birth in the US. It will also describe barriers to equitable care, highlight the impact of racial discrimination on birthers and families, and explore a collaborative care model as a solution to achieving health equity.
