Healing Racial Trauma Through Somatic Anti-Racism Practices

The effects of experienced and on-going trauma have a long-lasting impact on mental and physical health, behavioral tendencies and social relationships, including those within the workplace. This activity will identify the multifaceted effects of past and continuous trauma—including collective and racial trauma—on the well-being of individuals, cultures, communities, and social environments. It will review racism and oppressive tendencies and present strategies to skillfully manage difficult racial and cultural situations and their associated stressful responses. Importantly, trauma management therapies and practices will be identified, along with approaches to building communal anti-racist culture within the workplace.

Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of counselors, educators, medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, office staff, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists, and other HCPs and staff who are interested in understanding and healing racial trauma through somatic anti-racism practices.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the effects of trauma, especially racial trauma and oppressive tendencies in oneself and others.
- Describe the individual, relational, communal and systemic natures of racism, and how to better attend to each aspect with attunement and skill.
- Identify how to implement somatic skills to increase awareness of difficult racial and cultural situations and manage their associated stressful responses.
- Discuss the individual and collective responsibility to build anti-racist and communal culture.
- Identify the benefits of embodying communal culture-building practices as an integral part of core lifestyle values, in the workplace, with clients, and beyond.

Mariya Javed, MSW, LICSW, LADC

Mariya Javed is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Certified Brainspotting Consultant, and a Minnesota Board Approved Supervisor. She currently serves as the Director of Behavioral Health at a federally qualified health center, United Family Medicine, leading a team of therapists, psychiatric providers, and social workers to provide cutting-edge trauma-responsive, anti-oppressive counseling and addiction therapies in collaboration with primary care physicians.
Mariya has 12 years of experience in working with substance use disorders as well as extensive experience in medication assisted treatment therapies, complex and developmental trauma, brain injuries, and those with physical ailments and disabilities. She is passionate about social justice and anti-racist work and has provided consultation and training to various clients and agencies regarding the promotion and equity of marginalized communities, using practices such as somatic abolitionism.
In Mariya’s clinical practice, she offers trauma and addiction counseling to adults, young adults, and couples, with a variety of issues such as addiction, complex trauma, developmental trauma, generational and systemic trauma, depression, anxiety, and cultural and identity issues. She uses Brainspotting, as well as internal family systems, mindfulness, sensorimotor and somatic experiencing techniques. She believes in using an integrative, person-centered approach while also exploring the interconnectedness of systems within an individual’s life.
Mariya is deeply dedicated to teaching, training, and assisting clients, therapists, and organizations to evolve and grow into their best. As a Brainspotting consultant and racial trauma coach, she is actively involved in healing and education by building unity, collaboration, and community.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. OptumHealth Education maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 1.50 enduring continuing education credit.
Counselors and/or marriage and family therapists
CA: The Board of Behavioral Sciences has deferred CE course approvals to APA and ASWB for its licensees. See those approvals under Psychologists and Social Workers.
Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals, such as those listed below. Check with your board to be sure.
