Target Audience

Dr. Bedford earned a Bachelor's degree in psychology from Stanford University and his medical degree from Howard University. He completed a family medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals and was appointed Chief Resident. Dr. Bedford has been is a medical director with UnitedHealthcare Community and State-Texas since December 2010. In that time, he has played a role in the substantial growth of the health plan, including pioneering the Hidalgo SDA and the addition of the DSNP, Nursing Facilities, IDD and STAR Kids programs. True to his training, he is a generalist who works with all programs at the UHC health plan. His role has evolved from utilization review to case management and oversight functions.  He worked as an emergency room physician in the US Virgin Islands, and, after completing his health care policy fellowship, he worked in academic medicine. He has held full-time faculty appointments at Baylor College of Medicine and the UT Southwestern (Dallas) and the UT Houston (McGovern) medical schools. Before joining UHC, he was a medical director with a local health plan in Houston, Texas, that is affiliated with Harris Health systems. His goal is to deliver outstanding, evidence-based, preventive care to our members in a multidisciplinary manner. He firmly believes in a team approach to managing our members and fully appreciates our frontline staff.
