Review of Risk Factors in the Identification of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
Activity description
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in individuals aged 60 years and older, and some types, such as primary open angle glaucoma, have no warning signs; thus, early detection and treatment to protect against vision loss is crucial. This activity will examine risk factors for glaucoma that will assist health care professionals (HCPs) in the early identification of this condition in general primary eye care practice. Individual risk factors will be discussed, and pertinent literature will be reviewed to provide insight into how certain factors in combination, such as Krukenberg spindles, homogeneous trabecular meshwork pigmentation and iris transillumination defects can indicate an increased risk and alert HCPs to the presence of this disorder. A new tool will be introduced to help recommend when specific glaucoma testing is indicated.

About the presenter
Dr. Scott Edmonds is the chief eyecare officer at UnitedHealthcare. He is the emeritus co-director of the Low Vision, Contact Lens and Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service at Wills Eye Hospital, where he served in this role for 40 years and continues in a teaching capacity. He is a senior partner at Edmonds Eye Associates. He is a clinical professor at Western University of Health Sciences–College of Optometry, a member of the adjunct faculty of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University and a member of the allied medical staff at Lankenau Hospital. He has written and lectured extensively on clinical and public health topics. He is the author of a blog series on health care reform for Healio’s Primary Care Optometry News. A 1976 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a 1980 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Dr. Edmonds is a past president of the Philadelphia Optometric Society and the Chester Delaware Optometric Society as well as the 1988 president of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association. On the national level, he has served as the chairman of a number of committees for the American Optometric Association and has completed two terms on the American Council on Optometric Education.
Dr. Edmonds was honored by the Pennsylvania College of Optometry as the Preceptor of the Year in 1983. He was honored as the Optometrist of the Year in 1985 by the Philadelphia Optometric Society and again in 2008 by the Chester-Delaware Optometric Society. He was honored as the Pennsylvania Optometric Association Optometrist of the Year in 2008. He was a 2015 APEX award winner for publication excellence in the category of social media-blog Content and the 2016 winner of the Dr. Jerry P. Davidoff Memorial Award for leadership service.
