Diagnosing and Documenting Dementia

Activity description

Dementia is a disorder that is characterized by a decline in cognition involving one or more cognitive domains such as learning and memory, language, executive function, complex attention, perceptual-motor and social cognition. Causes of dementia can be reversible, or they can be irreversible and progressive. There are many factors that can cause symptoms of dementia. Potentially reversible dementia symptoms include those caused by depression, stroke, traumatic brain injury and certain medications. Irreversible and progressive dementias include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. This activity will define neurocognitive disorders and outline the clinical practice guideline recommendations for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Risk factors, screening tools and the diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease will also be discussed.
