This activity will provide an overview of the living-donor liver transplant procedure, the advantages and disadvantages of living-donor liver transplant, and the optimal timing for offering living donations to patients with liver cancer. Dr. Hughes will discuss the innovative approach advanced by experts at UPMC in which patients with liver cancer are offered the option of a living-donor transplant. He will discuss the experience and expertise offered by the UPMC Liver Transplant Program and their collaborative approach to working with referring physicians.

Activity description

Living-donor liver transplants are life-saving treatments that can greatly decrease transplant waitlist times for recipients and allow donors to meaningfully contribute to others’ lives.

These materials intended only for those that attended the 30th Annual National Conference: A Virtual Experience from Sept. 29–30, 2021.

This activity will discuss the combined procedure of CABG-liver transplant and the associated barriers for individuals experiencing both liver failure and coronary artery disease.
This activity will review the current medical and surgical techniques for managing intestinal failure, as well as provide a financial analysis for different treatment options.
This activity will review emerging strategies to predict, induce and monitor graft tolerance in kidney transplantation.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. More than 80 percent of lung cancers are classified as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Immunotherapy has become integrated into the treatment of these patients, which has led to improvements in survival and quality of life.
This activity will describe how these changes are used to determine treatment options to help maximize successful outcomes. New targeted therapies to treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML) will also be discussed.
This activity will describe the role of frailty in risk assessment and evaluation, as well as the effects on outcomes and recovery after transplantation.
This activity will discuss risk factors, long-term side effects and survivorship outcomes.
