Tools and Techniques for Managing Pain: Complementary and Integrative Approaches

Activity description

Evidence indicates that people with both acute and chronic pain can benefit from complementary management approaches. This activity will examine and evaluate the evidence supporting these approaches to pain management, including a review of usual care for common pain conditions. Dr. Bonakdar will also discuss the impact of individuals’ implicit beliefs on their choices; judgments; and nonverbal, pain-related behaviors.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers, therapists and other health care professionals who have an interest in the care of individuals with chronic pain.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the prevalence and rationale related to the use of complementary and integrative therapies in pain care.
  • Examine the evidence for common complementary and integrative therapies in the treatment of pain.
  • Evaluate effective models and techniques for coordinating immediate and long-term pain management.  
  • Recognize the importance of communication and empathy when managing individuals with pain.

About the presenter
Robert Bonakdar, MD is a Mayday Pain Fellow and the Director of Pain Management at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine since 2002.  He is a member of the Scripps Green Hospital Pain Management Task Force as well as the system-wide Opioid Stewardship Committee.  He is the co-editor of the Oxford University Press textbook of Integrative Pain Management.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Bonakdar received a Richter International Fellowship where he studied Eastern mind-body practices in Southeast Asia.  After completing his medical degree, he completed a fellowship at the Scripps Integrative Medicine Center with a focus on integrative pain management.  

In 2018 Dr. Bonakdar was invited to present to the congressionally mandated Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force as well as at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on non-pharmacological approaches to pain.
