Coronary Artery Disease (Angina & Acute Coronary Syndrome) Diagnosis and Documentation

Activity description

In this activity, we discuss some of the more common causes of coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is the most common type of heart disease and is usually caused by atherosclerosis. It can lead to myocardial ischemia, resulting in angina and potentially acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

When documenting angina, it is important to specify the type of angina and/or presence of atherosclerotic heart disease, if applicable. The term “unstable angina” should be reserved for the hospital setting. When documenting myocardial infarction (MI) post-hospitalization, include the timeline in order to appropriately classify an MI as acute (within 4 weeks) or old (beyond 4 weeks). Understanding these aspects of angina and MI documentation will improve overall accuracy and an individual’s plan of care.
