Gender Diversity in Mental Health and Substance Use
Gender diversity, which encompasses the variations in gender identity, role, and expression experienced by an individual, can strongly impact mental and physical health. Gender diversity also plays a role in the social and health care disparities experienced by gender-diverse individuals—such as members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) community—including stigmatization, bias, and marginalization in health care settings. These individuals often receive poorer quality care, show poorer long-term outcomes, and have lower levels of satisfaction with care received than the general population. This activity will provide education about the history and influence of gender diversity on mental health and neurodevelopmental issues and will examine the existing disparities in the health care setting. Existing standards and regulations in gender-diverse services within the health care environment will be discussed, along with current trends and outcomes. Participants will learn how to best address the needs that exist in caring for gender-diverse individuals and how to provide them with respectful, competent care that can improve outcomes.

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and therapists who are interested in learning about pertinent topics in behavioral health, including current trends, concerns, data, and influencing factors surrounding mental health outcomes.
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the history of gender diversity and its influence on individuals’ mental health, the care they receive, and their satisfaction with health care services.
- Describe current standards in gender-diverse care services, regulations, and the health care environment, and review existing disparities in care.
- Recognize the role of gender diversity in mood disorder, suicide, and neurodevelopmental issues and examine current trends, statistical data, prevalence, and outcomes.
- Identify how best to address the needs and disparities that exist in caring for gender-diverse individuals and discuss how to provide them with respectful and competent gender-diverse care.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Other States: If your state is not specifically listed, nearly all state Counselor and MFT boards accept either APA or ASWB approval, or are reciprocal with other state licensing board approvals, such as those listed below. Check with your board to be sure.
A certificate of attendance will be provided to learners upon completion of activity requirements, enabling participants to register with licensing boards or associations that have not been preapproved for credits. To apply for credit types not listed above, participants should use the procedure established by the specific organization from which they wish to obtain credit.
