People at risk of suicide are often seen in health care settings, and health care organizations have a unique opportunity to identify and facilitate suicide prevention. Although there are long-standing clinical best practices, gaps still exist. Suicide Risk Formulation (SRF) is a process by which a clinician forms a judgment about a patient’s foreseeable risk of suicidal behavior based on data collected from a Suicide Risk Assessment (SRA). Risk formulation may indicate that enhanced interventions and increased support may be needed. Treatment should focus on reducing the immediate suicide risk and exploring any underlying mental-health and/or substance-use disorder. This activity is designed to support health care professionals through risk-mitigation situations by providing an advanced continuing education opportunity to improve practice, skills and knowledge.

TennCare, in collaboration with Optum Rx, developed a multimodal program focused on encouraging LAI antipsychotic utilization and improving outcomes for patients with schizophrenia. This E-newsletter will provide an overview of the program, including details regarding the benefits of LAI atypical antipsychotics and other available agents, a brief review of schizophrenia and potential clinical steps. Additional information regarding the retrospective drug utilization review process and the rationale for brand drug preference will also be highlighted.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and emotions, as well as by impulsivity across a wide range of situations. BPD is often underrecognized and underdiagnosed. This activity will provide an update for clinicians on issues related to the prevalence, diagnosis, recognition, documentation, course, and treatment of BPD. A discussion on the frequency of underdiagnosis BPD in clinical settings, clinically useful approaches to improve detection, how to educate patients surrounding the treatment approaches such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and the impact it has on patients when diagnosed with BPD will also be highlighted.

In this activity, participants will explore the pandemic’s impacts on individuals’ mental health, including the increasing risks for, and prevalence of, stress, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, especially for special populations such as front-line personnel (i.e., health care professionals (HCPs), teachers and funeral directors), children and the millennial and geriatric populations. In addition, participants will review the multifaceted effects of the pandemic on the behavioral health care delivery system, specifically regarding access to care, delivery of services and digital health utilization. The implications for current and future utilization of delivery modalities, such as telehealth, behavioral health coaching and other mental health care management strategies will be discussed, taking into consideration the behavioral health care concerns that have emerged during this transitional time in response to the transforming health care landscape and the population’s evolving mental health care needs.
