$0.00 The COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve and present new health burdens, including the emergence of the more easily transmissible Delta variant (i.e., the B.1.617.2. variant, a mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus), which highlights the need for continued support of vaccination, and the development of chronic long-term sequelae collectively termed “long COVID,” which affects 10–20 percent of COVID-19-positive patients with new, persistent symptoms ranging from joint pain and chronic shortness of breath to cognitive dysfunction. Significant knowledge gaps exist in regard to these concerns; many patients with long COVID risk having symptoms dismissed, and more clinical studies are needed on the infectious profile of the Delta variant and how to best utilize vaccines and potential boosters to combat infections.
