It will discuss appropriate use of pronouns and terminology and review current statistics regarding social and health care disparities experienced by this community. Lastly, it will explore how to create environments in which LGBTQ+ individuals can feel validated, safe, and welcome.

This activity will provide learners with an overview of the prevalence and geographic variability of pediatric asthma, in part through an analysis of data from Chicago, where this variability is especially notable. It will discuss ways to improve pediatric asthma, provide learners with updated management strategies and describe the potential of new technologies, such as sensor-based inhaler monitoring in children, to improve outcomes across diverse populations through an examination of the recent clinical trial, Improving Technology-Assisted Recording of Asthma Control in Children (iTRACC).

This activity will provide education about predictive indicators of suicide risk, and how to best evaluate individuals for these risks and stressors. The history and incidence of suicide, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts will be examined, along with the prevalence of suicidality among certain populations, including those of differing gender, race, age, and socioeconomic groups. HCPs will identify interventional treatments that address suicide’s risk factors and how to incorporate interprofessional cooperation between HCPs and social service programs to intervene on behalf of patients who are at increased suicidal risk.

Participants in this activity will learn about the system framework theory of decision-making and how System I- and System II-type cognitive processes can best be utilized in the health care setting. The role of heuristics (mental “shortcuts” and rules-of-thumb) will be examined, as well as the types of cognitive biases (inherent and often unconscious systematic errors in thinking) that most commonly result in negative health outcomes. Debiasing strategies to address these negative influences on rational and optimal decision-making that are applicable to the self and the health care team will be explored.
