Adverse Childhood Experiences Part II: ACE Screening in Pediatrics

Activity description

Substantial exposure to traumatic events impacts an estimated 50% to 75% of the population today. Trauma is linked to adversity, posttraumatic stress disorder, mental illness, interpersonal problems, substance abuse and chronic disease, which in turn drive up health care costs. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study shows a connection between an individual’s physiologic stress response and subsequent neurologic alterations, as well as changes in metabolic and immune function and increased risk of complex medical conditions.

Recent, national, population-based data show that one-half of children in the U.S. have ACE exposure, and yet a national survey noted that the majority of health care professionals (HCPs) are not knowledgeable about ACEs and lack understanding of how to assess and respond to information about ACEs reported by children or family members.

This activity, part II in a series, will discuss the importance of and rationale behind ACE screening along with the available tools and resources to enable HCPs to utilize appropriate referral, treatment and intervention services for individuals.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of case managers, counselors, educators, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, PAs, physicians, psychologists, social workers (all practice types), therapists and other HCPs who have an interest in the current science on ACEs and developmental pediatrics.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare and contrast protocols and practices for ACE screening.
  • Identify the steps to integrate ACE screening into medical practice.
  • Apply and utilize appropriate ACE referrals, services and treatment and intervention strategies.
  • List the supports and opportunities offered by the National Pediatric Practice Community to facilitate integration of ACE screening into practice.

About the presenters
Dr. Lisa Gutierrez Wang is the Director of Clinical Programs at the Center for Youth Wellness (CYW). She is responsible for managing a multidisciplinary team to treat children/youth who are referred by pediatricians at the Bayview Child Health Center because they exhibit signs and symptoms of toxic stress related to exposure to early life adversity. She holds a PhD in clinical psychology and a Master's degree in counseling psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She completed her pre- and post-doctoral fellowship at the Child Trauma Research Program (CTRP) at the University of California, San Francisco under the mentorship of Drs. Alicia F. Lieberman and Patricia van Horn. Dr. Gutierrez Wang's work has focused primarily on assessing and treating the effects of complex psychological trauma in ethnically and linguistically diverse populations. Her prior clinical experience includes work with trauma-impacted children, adolescents and adults in outpatient, day, residential, inpatient and psychiatric emergency treatment settings. Prior to joining CYW in 2015, Dr. Gutierrez Wang was the Behavioral Health Director for Intensive Services at the Edgewood Center for Children and Families.

Karissa M. Luckett obtained her nursing license and Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1994. She started her career as a rehabilitation nurse and subsequently obtained her CRRN. She moved on from there to a case management role while pursuing a Master’s degree in social work. Ms. Luckett then went on to work in a large pediatric academic facility where she developed a Population Health Department. During this time, she oversaw the Asthma Management Program, obtained her asthma educator certification and served as the President of the Asthma Coalition of Texas. Ms. Luckett has most recently been serving as a health care quality consultant, and she has developed primary care programs for pursuing patient-centered medical home recognition, physician quality incentive programs and developing organizational quality dashboards. In 2011, she obtained a certification in healthcare quality in 2011. Ms. Luckett currently serves on the Board of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Alliance for Healthcare Excellence.
