The Baby Boomers: A Geriatric Challenge for Oncologists

This educational activity consists of recorded presentations from Advances in the Management of Oncology Patients held in Orlando,Florida on April 6-8, 2011.
The baby boom is about to create a new challenge for oncologists. In 2050, the number of Americans over the age of 65 is projected to be 88.5 million, more than double the 40.2 million projected today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Historically, palliative care was the only treatment offered for the elderly person diagnosed with cancer. With the increasing number and efficacy of treatment options, even older patients are now considered candidates for chemotherapy. This presentation will discuss the challenges oncologists must consider when evaluating the aging cancer patient and the factors considered in choosing the appropriate therapy.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  1. Discuss the challenges oncologists encounter when evaluating and treating the aging cancer patient.
