$0.00 PWID often experience restricted independence due to limited communicative abilities, which can be challenging for HCPs and caregivers. HCPs need to be aware of each individual’s perspective and adapt their communicative behaviors to accommodate the unique needs of PWID. Decreasing barriers to effective patient-centered communication with PWID will increase the delivery of meaningful health care, build rapport and lead to the development of trusted relationships, which should increase perceived quality of care.

$0.00 HCPs often lack experience and/or training in communicating with PWID. To help facilitate effective patient-centered communication, HCPs require clear guidelines and competency development on this vulnerable patient population. The R.A.F.T. (Respect, Accommodation, Follow-Up, Time) training was developed to provide an evidence-based model for effective communication interactions between HCPs, PWID and caregivers. R.A.F.T. was designed for HCPs across the continuum of care, from those who schedule appointments and welcome patients at reception to those involved in ongoing care.

$0.00 Health advocacy is essential for system reforms and positive change. Advocacy encompasses a wide range of activities that influence decision makers and ultimately shape policies from the local/state level to the federal level. As the health care system continues to evolve, HCPs must incorporate advocacy into their roles to ensure increased access, reduced costs and higher quality of care. Being an advocate can have far-reaching effects on the public’s health by providing policymakers with the data and patient/consumer examples they need to make informed decisions.
