$0.00 Activity descriptionPsychological and sociological factors have a significant influence on how well individuals age. Age-related medical issues can also lead to greater psychological distress, including depression. This can lead to loneliness, which may lead to serious health-related consequences. Social restrictions that some illnesses place upon older adults’ lifestyle can result in isolation and loneliness. This activity will discuss the relationship between loneliness and poor psychological adjustment, social isolation, depression, decreased mobility and cognitive decline.

Unfortunately, older adults may face additional memory and cognitive challenges that can further limit their health literacy. There are several different age-related changes that could contribute to the decrease in health literacy in older adults. Although the rate and severity of these age-related changes vary among individuals, these should be considered when assessing an older adult’s health literacy.

Major barriers to obtaining effective hearing and rehabilitative care can include awareness, access, treatment options, cost and device effectiveness.
