This activity will review the prevalence of obesity in different populations and its role in the development of chronic disease. It will discuss the effects of bias, discrimination, and health disparities on the development and treatment of obesity. Importantly, it will educate participants about the benefits of a multi-modal collaborative treatment approach to mitigate contributing factors to obesity and address challenges in access to care that can influence obesity-related health outcomes in certain communities.

This activity focuses on the physiological processes that occur in obesity and cause fundamental changes in neurocircuitry that impact mental and physical health, sleep, aging, and the experience of pain. Participants will examine the cycle of obesity and how bias, stigma, discrimination, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) negatively contribute to these mental and physical effects.

This activity will highlight new updates in our understanding of how diabesity develops and describe the negative physiologic effects of this disease on multiple body systems, notably the cardiovascular and renal systems. Optimal treatments for diabesity will be identified, along with an overview of the health burden of diabesity related to long-term complications and reduced function, quality of life and life expectancy.

Activity description Quality of pain management at the end of life may vary in sociodemographic groups that are often underrepresented. Barriers to care in interracial settings include lack of trust in the health care system, cultural factors including spirituality and the concept of hope, lack of knowledge about services offered, lack of a diverse hospice staff, and access issues.

Obesity, a major health concern that now affects over 40 percent of the U.S. population, is highly influenced by multiple factors and social determinants of health (SDOH), including disparities in health care access, morbidity and mortality rates, health behavior, and multiple risk factors. Diagnostic disparities may also exist: data on body mass index (BMI) thresholds — used in diagnosis and metabolic and cardiovascular evaluation — indicate variations in specific race/ethnicity and gender subgroups that may not be incorporated in current practice. These disparities and how they are currently being addressed are discussed during this session, as well as the prevalence of obesity and concomitant conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among populations of varying age, sex, race/ethnicity, and SDOH.

The successful management of obesity—a complex, chronic and relapsing disease—through sustainable weight loss interventions can greatly improve individuals’ overall health status and diminish the severity of concomitant diseases such as diabetes. This activity will provide an overview of obesity and diabetes that describes effective multi-interventional approaches to weight loss and, importantly, highlights the role of incorporated lifestyle changes in promoting the likelihood of weight loss success and improved health outcomes. The conversational style of this activity will encourage discussion around obesity-care planning and examine the factors that must be considered due to the chronic and relapsing characteristics of this disease.
