This activity will provide education about the history and influence of gender diversity on mental health and neurodevelopmental issues and will examine the existing disparities in the health care setting. Existing standards and regulations in gender-diverse services within the health care environment will be discussed, along with current trends and outcomes. Participants will learn how to best address the needs that exist in caring for gender-diverse individuals and how to provide them with respectful, competent care that can improve outcomes.

Activity description Quality of pain management at the end of life may vary in sociodemographic groups that are often underrepresented. Barriers to care in interracial settings include lack of trust in the health care system, cultural factors including spirituality and the concept of hope, lack of knowledge about services offered, lack of a diverse hospice staff, and access issues.

Obesity, a major health concern that now affects over 40 percent of the U.S. population, is highly influenced by multiple factors and social determinants of health (SDOH), including disparities in health care access, morbidity and mortality rates, health behavior, and multiple risk factors. Diagnostic disparities may also exist: data on body mass index (BMI) thresholds — used in diagnosis and metabolic and cardiovascular evaluation — indicate variations in specific race/ethnicity and gender subgroups that may not be incorporated in current practice. These disparities and how they are currently being addressed are discussed during this session, as well as the prevalence of obesity and concomitant conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer among populations of varying age, sex, race/ethnicity, and SDOH.
