Valve repair is the treatment of choice for mitral valve disease in children. However, mitral valve replacement (MVR) may be required in a subset of children for whom the mitral valve cannot be repaired or following repair failure. If a child needs a mitral valve replacement, there are only a limited number of options available, all of which have one limitation in common, they have a fixed diameter and cannot grow with a child.
This activity will discuss the latest techniques and strategies for managing pediatric valve disease. It will also explore the considerations required when deciding to repair versus replace valves and weigh the benefits of repeat procedures and short-term increased surgical intervention versus long-term outcomes.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

1. Identify how advancements in surgical techniques and technology are improving outcomes for pediatric patients with valve disease
2. Evaluate the benefits of valve repair versus replacement
3. Discuss the considerations required when evaluating options for valve disease treatment
