This educational activity consists of recorded presentations from Innovations in Solid Organ and Blood/Marrow Transplantation held in Scottsdale, Arizona on March 7-9, 2011.
Each year, children and adults in the United States develop life-threatening diseases for which a marrow or blood cell transplant could be a cure. Through its extensive national and international networks, the NMDP maintains the world’s largest and most diverse registry of blood stem cell donors, including cord blood units. The NMDP offers searching patients who do not have suitable family donors a single point of access for all three types of stem cells used in transplantation. This presentation will describe the process and costs associated with stem cell search and acquisition, as well as address barriers patients may encounter throughout that process.

At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

1. Describe the process and costs associated with stem cell search and acquisition.
2. Identify barriers patients may encounter throughout the search and acquisition process.
3. Discuss how the timing of donated stem cells affects patients, their disease process and outcomes.
