Reducing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Admissions With Single-Embryo Transfer (Women’s & Infants’ Health Symposium: Medical Management Today for Healthy Living Tomorrow)

This educational activity consists of recorded presentations from Women’s & Infants’ Health Symposium: Medical Management Today for Healthy Living Tomorrow held in Chicago, Illinois on May 12-13, 2011.
Assisted reproductive technologies have become an evermore commonly accepted medical treatment for infertility. However, many controversial areas exist in this practice, including determining the optimal number of embryos for transfer, in an effort to control the rising number of multiple gestations and the associated complications of multiple births. This speaker will review trends in NICU admissions as a result of assisted reproductive technologies, discuss barriers to reductions in multiple births, explain the role of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in reducing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation and describe candidates for single-embryo transfer.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  1. Outline neonatal intensive care unit admission trends as a result of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and the substantial increase in multiple births
  2. Describe appropriate candidates for single-embryo transfer and approaches to improve physician and patient acceptance of this treatment
  3. Compare the risks of controlled ovarian hyperstimulations with medications vs. in vitro fertilization (IVF) and explain why IVF reduces risk
  4. Review recent progress made to decrease ART-related multiples and premature births, and discuss barriers to continued reductions in multiple births
