This conference will provide attendees with an overview of emerging trends in oncology, blood and marrow transplantation and solid organ transplantation. Join us as clinical experts provide insight into innovative approaches to the ongoing management and continuing support of patients with complex cancers and organ failures.

Specialists will share their insights into: personalized medicine; potential changes impacting hospitals and transplant centers due to The Affordable Care Act; challenges with chronic transplantation rejection; and therapies for children with intestinal failure. Conference participants will also gain unique insight into living kidney donations; the principles of lung cancer screening and of managing brain tumors; and the treatment and management of complex oncology, blood/marrow stem cell transplant, and solid organ transplant patients.

After completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Explain how The Affordable Care Act is impacting hospitals and transplant centers through measuring and improving quality of care.
  2. Discuss the benefits of improved transplant success rates with living donor kidney transplant compared to patients receiving kidney from a deceased donor.
  3. Recognize the complexity of diagnosing and treating chronic pancreatitis and the indications for autologous islet cell transplant.
  4. Describe innovative medical and surgical therapies that have redefined the outcomes for children with intestinal failure.
  5. Summarize innovative and aggressive approaches to caring for patients with cancers of the liver and bile ducts and when to consider transplantation.
  6. Examine the concerns surrounding hepatitis C in the posttransplant patient, and recognize new therapies and effective treatment options.
  7. Indicate the role of genetic testing and counseling with advanced-heart-failure patients.
  8. Define the emerging new tools of “personalized medicine” using genome analysis in treating patients with cancer.
  9. Illustrate the evolving evidence supporting blood and marrow transplantation as a treatment of choice for various malignant diseases.
  10. Explain how early detection of lung cancer provides an opportunity for decreasing mortality, by offering cancer screening for those individuals at high risk for lung cancer.
  11. Distinguish the indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) with those at risk for tissue injury post radiation therapy.
