Advances in the Management of Oncology Patients Internet Activity Enduring Material

  • Physicians - This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Institute for the Advancement of Human Behavior (IAHB) and OptumHealth Education. The IAHB is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Advances in the Management of Oncology Patients will examine the latest developments in this highly complex field of medicine. Join OptumHealth as some of the nation’s leading clinicians explore the status of current therapies, emerging treatment modalities, and expected outcomes for pediatric and adult oncology patients.

Though cancer is still the second leading cause of death in the United States, there has been a proliferation of life-saving treatment advances in recent years, bringing new hope to patients and caregivers alike. This conference is designed to help health care professionals face the challenges of best managing cancer patients by keeping them informed of these scientific clinical advances.

This educational activity consists of recorded presentations from the 2010 Advances in the Management of Oncology Patients conference held in Scottsdale, Arizona on April 26-28, 2010.

Learning Objectives
At the end of these educational activities, participants should be able to

  1. Identify current and emerging therapies for pediatric and adult complex cancers, as well as management strategies to maximize patient outcomes.
  2. Discuss the use of screening and diagnostic technologies and recognize cancer patients with complex oncologic problems who require specialized care.
  3. Examine the influence of clinical trials in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, and explain how the results positively impact the quality of life and survival of cancer patients.
  4. Analyze the importance of comparative effectiveness research of medical treatments to enhance value for patients and the health care delivery system.
  5. Describe cancer survivorship and how patients may best navigate the complex issues they face after treatment.
