Activity Description
Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness associated with a high level of functional disability that translates into a significant burden on both patients and society. Delays in proper diagnosis can lead to years of missed treatment opportunities. It is critical for clinicians to correctly recognize the signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia and differentiate among medical and psychiatric comorbidities. The most effective treatment strategy requires clinicians to develop an individualized treatment approach that considers the patient's fibromyalgia symptoms and severity, level of function and stressors, and presence of medical and psychiatric comorbidities. Long-term management strategies should include optimizing effective treatments to target patient-specific fibromyalgia symptom domains, while minimizing side effects that may impede medication adherence and patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to
  1. Summarize the prevalence and clinical presentation of fibromyalgia as a disease state
  2. Explain the importance of early diagnosis and differentiation of comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions
  3. Identify evidence-based pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches to relieve pain and improve the patient's functional ability and quality of life
